Verbatim

From TIME Magazine (August 4th, 2008 edition):

"Wall Street got drunk."

George W. Bush, describing the nation's troubled economy at a GOP fund raiser after requesting that all cameras be turned off.

Thank you, Mr. President. For doing your part to devastate the American economy these past eight years. Thank you that millions of working American families now CAN'T afford to drive to work AND put food on the table. Thank you that millions of jobs have been lost, homes have been taken away and the money that our grandparents counted on for security after a lifetime of hard work is being poured into a thoughtless, endless and costly re-creation of a wild west showdown.

Thank you for your deeply moving and sympathetic explanation for our national crisis. This is the sort of political poetry that is sure to grant hope and comfort to the masses.....

The masses who will turn out in record numbers in November to vote for a junior senator from Illinois because he brought water to a dry America with just one word.....

Change.

Julie, first let me say that I love you, and miss you terribly.

Second, let me rip into your perspective on the office of the President of the United States (without consideration to who is serving in the position).

Regardless of who is in office, the role of president is not to pamper us with mood-boosting charisma, NOR is it to drive the economy.

The executive branch of our government was not created to babysit the business cycle, foreign or domestic.

It is true that we do need change. However, the change we need is to shrink our government, not expand it's powers through the spread of socialism.

People need to learn to take responsibility for their own lives and their own economic decisions. It is not the responsibility of the government to provide care for "Oops! I forgot to wear a condom." families.

As always, well articulated comments. I would expect nothing less from you! That said.

I know the role of the president is not to pamper the masses with "mood-booster charisma". If that was the case, any silly self-help guru could lay claim to the office of leader of the free world.

But it is also NOT the role of the president to squander great power and responsibility and to leave your broken condom families out in the cold with a big "oops, good luck", and then to sum it all up with such a dumbass comment. Part of the President's job is to be a face and a voice to the people who elected him in the first place. He's a leader, he is tasked with parting words that should comfort and direct in times such as these, and it was nothing short of failure on his part when his explanation for the state of the economy and financial turmoil is that Wall Street got drunk. I know it was meant to be a joke, but for one in his position, it was an irresponsible one at best.

And if you watch the news or read any press at all or even have a pulse, you'd know that much of the public are feeling the pinch of the credit crisis, not just your broken condom families. And spreading socialism?? We just want to pay for our gas, save our homes from foreclosure, and be able to retire! And all you have for us is that "wall street got drunk"????? WOW. Thank you.
